Fred Piattoni operated seven Powder Puff hair salons, headed a pinnacle cosmetologists’ affiliation and helped draw as many as 80,000 humans to Chicago for the nation’s second-biggest beauty show.

After serving in the Army in International War II, Mr. Piattoni attended cosmetology school on the GI bill, consistent with his son Gary Piattoni, an appraiser on public television’s “Antiques Roadshow.” He opened his Powder Puff salons in Palatine, Park Ridge, Wilmette, Winnetka and on Devon Avenue.
